Choosing a European marketplace

Most marketplaces here are national. Allegro is the platform of choice in Poland, Cdiscount in France, eMAG in Romania and bol in the Netherlands and Belgium. Back Market, Vinted and Catawiki work across many countries but each serves one niche. Sellers on a marketplace set their own prices and shipping terms, and they can be located outside Europe, so the seller's country and rating matter as much as the platform. The 14-day right of withdrawal under EU law applies to most distance purchases from traders.

Ownership notes

eMAG is marked as having a non-European parent: it is held by Prosus, which its own site says is majority-owned by the South African group Naspers. The other marketplaces are held by European companies or investors, among them Casino Group (Cdiscount), the Schwarz Group (Kaufland) and Ahold Delhaize (bol).

What Europe does not offer

Europe has no single marketplace with the reach of Amazon or eBay across the whole continent. For local second-hand trade see classifieds platforms, and for shops without third-party sellers see online retailers.
