Classifieds platforms connect private sellers and buyers of second-hand goods, vehicles, flats and jobs, usually locally. Europe has strong national leaders: Kleinanzeigen in Germany, willhaben in Austria, Marktplaats in the Netherlands, Subito in Italy, leboncoin in France, Wallapop in Spain and FINN, Blocket and Tori in the Nordics. OLX is the main classifieds brand in several Central and Eastern European countries.

Who owns the classifieds platforms

Ownership is more concentrated than the many brand names suggest. Adevinta runs Kleinanzeigen, Marktplaats, Subito and leboncoin. It is owned by funds advised by Permira (London) and Blackstone (New York) together with General Atlantic, TCV and others, and the exact shareholdings are not published, so no single non-European majority holder can be shown. Vend, a listed Norwegian company, owns FINN, Blocket and Tori. willhaben is held by Austrian and Luxembourg-based owners since Adevinta sold its stake in 2025. Wallapop and OLX are marked as having a non-European parent: Wallapop belongs fully to the Korean group Naver since January 2026, and OLX to Prosus, which its own site says is majority-owned by the South African group Naspers.

What to watch for

Open classifieds attract scammers, so local pick-up and protected payment options are the safer route for expensive items. Fees differ: private ads are usually free, while professional sellers pay for visibility. Each platform is national, so cross-border trade is limited, and the sites are in the local language.

What Europe does not offer

No single European classifieds site covers the whole continent. For auctions and curated sales see online marketplaces such as Catawiki, and see European alternatives to eBay for a comparison by use case.
