eBay is a US online marketplace where private and commercial sellers offer new and used goods through auctions and fixed-price listings. According to the company, it has about 136 million active buyers worldwide. In Germany the former eBay Kleinanzeigen was sold to Adevinta and renamed Kleinanzeigen in 2023, so local classifieds there no longer belong to eBay.

European alternatives to eBay

No single European site copies eBay's global reach, but the individual functions have European counterparts. For local second-hand trade there are classifieds platforms such as Kleinanzeigen, Marktplaats, leboncoin, Subito, willhaben and Wallapop. Catawiki covers curated auctions for collectibles, Vinted second-hand fashion and Back Market refurbished electronics. General online marketplaces such as Allegro add new goods from third-party sellers.

What to expect

Most of these platforms are national and in the local language, so buyers and sellers usually stay within one country. Fees and buyer protection differ from eBay: classifieds are mostly free for private sellers, while Catawiki, Vinted and Back Market charge fees to buyers or sellers. Wallapop and OLX are marked as having a non-European parent.
