Reason Studios

Website

Reason Studios, formerly Propellerhead Software, is a music software company in Stockholm. It was founded in 1994 and became known for ReCycle, whose REX loop format is still an industry standard, and for ReBirth. Reason followed in 2000: a digital audio workstation (DAW) built around a virtual rack in which instruments and effects are connected with virtual cables.

Features

  • The Reason DAW combines sequencer, mixer and a large library of instruments, effects and players.
  • Rack Extensions, introduced in 2012, let third parties add instruments and effects to the rack.
  • The Reason Rack Plugin (VST3, AU, AAX) runs the rack inside other DAWs. Reason Free offers 15 synths and effects there.
  • Reason 14 arrived in 2026 with a track-centric workflow and sequencer improvements.

Ownership

In January 2026 Reason Studios announced that it is joining LANDR, a music platform from Montréal. Verdane, its investor since 2017, exited with the deal. The Stockholm team and the brand remain, which is why the product carries the non-European parent flag. Reason Studios states that existing licenses, pricing and support do not change immediately.
