Columbia Sportswear Company is an American outdoor clothing and equipment business headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Founded there in 1938 as a family hat distributor, it now designs, develops, markets and distributes apparel, footwear, accessories and equipment for outdoor, active and everyday use. Columbia is its best known label, alongside SOREL, Mountain Hardwear and prAna.

From a family business to an outdoor group

The company began when the Boyle family acquired a small hat distributor after emigrating from Germany. Gert Boyle later led the business through decades of growth and became closely associated with its practical outdoor identity. Columbia incorporated in Oregon in 1961 and built a global business while retaining its principal executive office in Portland.

Clothing, footwear and equipment

The Columbia range includes jackets, insulated coats, shirts, trousers, footwear, bags and accessories. Product lines cover hiking, trail running, snow sports, fishing and hunting, as well as clothing for daily wear. Technologies such as waterproof breathable fabrics, thermal insulation and adjustable fit systems are presented across different price points and activity levels.

More than one label

Columbia Sportswear Company also owns Sorel, a footwear focused label, Mountain Hardwear for technical climbing and mountain apparel, and prAna for active lifestyle clothing. These brands share the public company and distribution network but address different needs. This listing refers specifically to the Columbia label, rather than treating every product in the corporate portfolio as one brand.

How to compare outdoor brands

European alternatives span technical apparel, hiking equipment and broad sports retail. Vaude, Ortovox, Deuter, Schöffel, Bergans and Jack Wolfskin cover outdoor clothing or equipment, while Ferrino, Hilleberg, Wechsel and Tatonka are relevant for camping gear. Decathlon offers a much broader range, and Ortlieb focuses on cycling bags and outdoor carrying equipment. Compare a specific product category, materials, repair options, warranties and manufacturing information before choosing.
