EDEKA
WebsiteEDEKA is a German retail cooperative with its headquarters in Hamburg, founded in Leipzig in 1907. According to the EDEKA Verbund, it was formed more than 115 years ago and brings together about 3,200 independent merchants, 10,871 stores and 417,500 employees. In 2025 the Verbund reported total sales of 77.3 billion euros.
How it works
Most EDEKA stores are run by independent merchants who are members of the cooperative, supplied by six regional companies: Nordwest, Minden-Hannover, Hessenring, Nordbayern-Sachsen-Thüringen, Südwest and Südbayern. The Verbund also owns the discount chain Netto Marken-Discount and produces fresh bakery and meat products and many own brands.
Range
EDEKA stores differ in size, from neighbourhood shops to large EDEKA Center stores, so the range depends on the merchant. Recent initiatives named by the company include the regional label EDEKA Regional, the organic concept NATURKIND and the health product line Curafit plus.
Where to find it
EDEKA operates in Germany. Stores of Netto Marken-Discount, part of the Verbund, are counted in the figures above.
