Ownership notes

Two companies on this page are marked as having a non-European parent: Supercell, of which the Chinese group Tencent acquired about 81.4 percent in 2016, and Rovio, which the Japanese company Sega bought in 2023. Tencent also holds minority stakes in Ubisoft (9.99 percent, plus a 26.32 percent economic interest in its subsidiary Vantage Studios), Paradox Interactive (about 10 percent), Bohemia Interactive and Larian Studios. These are not majorities, so those companies remain listed without a flag. The headquarters of all nine companies are in Europe.

What Europe does not offer

No European company builds game consoles at the scale of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, and the biggest PC store, Steam, comes from the United States. Europe has independent stores with a different approach, which the category PC game stores lists, and the page on European alternatives to Steam compares them.
