An SMS API lets an application send and receive text messages through a web request instead of a phone. Typical uses are login codes, order and delivery notices, appointment reminders and alerts. The provider hands the message to a mobile operator, often over direct connections, and reports back whether it was delivered. The European SMS API providers below are headquartered in Europe, which makes them candidates when looking for a Twilio alternative.

Which provider fits which project

  • Small projects and developers: Sinch offers pay-as-you-go pricing with a free trial, so a project can be tested before paying.
  • Large international volumes: Sinch, Infobip and LINK Mobility are built for enterprise traffic across many countries.
  • Several channels in one API: Sinch, Infobip and LINK Mobility combine SMS with WhatsApp, Viber or RCS, so a message can fall back from one channel to another.
  • Email and SMS together: Brevo adds SMS to a platform that many teams already use for email.

What to check before choosing

  • Price per destination: SMS is billed per message and varies strongly by country. Compare rate cards for your main destinations and ask about fees for numbers.
  • Sender and registration rules: Several countries require registered sender names or numbers, for example 10DLC registration in the US. Providers differ in how much of that they handle for you.
  • Features around the message: Delivery reports, two-way SMS, number lookup and webhooks are not equally available everywhere.
  • Data protection: A European headquarters does not make SMS delivery purely European. Messages pass through operator networks and sometimes partners abroad, and Sinch and Infobip also run sizeable US operations. Ask for a data processing agreement. Infobip received 200 million US dollars from the US investor One Equity Partners in 2020, with the shares not made public.

FAQ

Is there a European alternative to Twilio?

Yes. Sinch, Infobip and LINK Mobility offer broad communication platforms like Twilio, and Brevo adds an SMS API to a marketing platform. The page on Twilio alternatives compares them in detail.

How do I send an SMS through an API?

You create an account, receive an API key and send a request with sender, recipient number and text. Most providers offer SDKs for common languages and report delivery by webhook.

Are SMS codes secure for logins?

They are better than a password alone but weaker than codes from an authenticator app or passkeys, because phone numbers can be hijacked.
